Two tough heavyweights, Doug "The Viking" Thompson and Tony "The Spartan" Matzke have sparked debate and amazement with their fights in the midwest. The great thing - beyond the entertaining fights - is that both fighters are sponsored by Tap or Sleep, a clothing company that orginated in Hanover with Jerod Phillips and expanded to the midwest. THE WAR BEGAN FEBRUARY 09 IN GRAIN VALLEY MISSOURI WHEN THE VIKING (DOUG THOMPSON) AND THE SPARTAN (TONY MATZKE) WENT TO BATTLE. The heavyweight warriors banged it out the whole three rounds, reminiscent of "Don Fry vs. Yoshihiro Takayama".
The Battle went to the judges with the decision being a draw.
March 09 the Viking wins a different battle and receives a title (True Fight Fan heavyweight championship). With both of their records 2-0-1 they shall meet again for the title. May 09 the second battle commences.
With both warriors after the belt, Round 1 starts off where they left off 2 months prior. Punches looking like midieval mace ball and chains, colliding with heads as if they had armor. Neither of them stunned. They end up on the ground and the adrenaline gets to Thompson as he lands an up kick while Matzke is on his knees over him.
The fight is stopped and Matzke wisely takes his full 5 minute break. They get back to action landing pounding strikes that would drop a Brahma bull. First round ends in the midst of them stalking each other. The second round starts and they go back to war.
They exchange solid knees in muay thai clinches, Matzke takes Thompson down as Thompson attempts the guillotine choke. Matzke pops his head out about 15 seconds later and is in mount. Matzke begins to throw those hands of ashlar and Thompson attempts a sweep which was successfully in motion until the fight is stopped again.
The ref warns Matzke for grabbing the cage to avoid the sweep. The fight continues with nonstop action when Matzke lands an uppercut that forces Thompson to take a few steps back. With that punch Matzke breaks his right hand. The third round begins, Thompson lands a few combinations and Matzke lands a devastating leg kick that buckles Thompson's knee.
Thompson shoots and they end up in north-south position with Matzke on top landing a few shots. Thompson explodes into a reversal that put him on top in the north-south position. They go to the ground again as Matzke is working to get mount and the ref stops the action again. Matzke is deducted a point for grabbing the cage. At the end of the round they wait on the judges.
It's a draw!!!
In a title fight they cannot end in a draw. It goes to a 4th round which is sudden victory. Matzke with a broken hand and Thompson gassed they get back at it with Thompson throwing 5-shot combinations and Matzke taking them with his hand up like Rocky letting Thompson punch out and out of nowhere he explodes with a takedown. Matzke lands some hard shots and ends the round with an onslaught. Now waiting on the judges with one judge giving it to thompson and the second judge gives it to Matzke. The third judge decides the winner of the battle and your new!!! True Fight Fan heavyweight champion is tonyyyyy Maaaatzzkeeee!!!!
Will there be another battle to this heavyweight war of 09? I would say there has to be!!!
